On a year-round basis, kids and Lake Placid are meant for each other.
We hear all the time that our youth are spending too much time sitting at home just exercising their thumbs. And while the need to learn modern communication is valid, all that reliance on electronic devices and āgamesā is over the top.
For youngsters, Lake Placid changes the paradigm. As we come into summer season, youthful guests at the Mirror Lake Inn can spend time swimming at our private beach on Mirror Lake, or in our indoor and outdoor pools. Swimming is a great activity to stretch the body (take a look at Michael Phelps), burn calories and immerse yourself in a life-long activity. On a Saturday night, you can cap it with Sāmores served at our beach.
Children can use their brains in games of lawn checkers just in front of the Mountain View building. Again, the idea is to be outside, weather-permitting.
Tennis and golf lessons/clinics are readily available for juniors at the Whiteface Club and Resort, once again leading to lifetime sports.
How about a family fishing outing with the Mirror Lake Innās Gary Marchuk? Gary can bring you to all the exclusive nooks and crannies. Thereās nothing better than seeing the look on someoneās face, especially a child, after their first catch.Ā
Letās not forget the plethora of hiking and biking in the Adirondacks. Bikers of all abilities and ages can choose from the solitude of secondary roads, the idyllic trails at Mount Van Hoevenberg, or the amped up vertical of Whiteface Mountain.
Hikers just need to open their doors as they are surrounded by the 46 Adirondack High Peaks, which offer lunchtime climbs on Cobble Mountain with the family, overnight experiences on Mount Marcy and Algonquin, or something in between.Ā
With the youngsters involved, we would suggest a tamer and shorter, experience up these mountain trails. Again, your hotel front desk will be happy to oblige with pertinent information, as will our Main Street shops such as Eastern Mountain Sports and High Peaks Cyclery.
Once youāre here, with so much to do, the younger guests might never need to charge their iPhones. And in our view, thatās not a bad thing.
