Adirondack Day Trip - Port Kent, Wilmington, Ausable, & more

By Marjorie Cochran (my mom and Ms. Wonderful) May 29, 2017

A warm and heartfelt thank you to my mom, Margie Cochran, for being a guest writer on this Adirondack day trip. Margie is an innkeeper at the Kiwassa Lake B&B and has lived in Saranac Lake for over 30 years. She's her kid's biggest fan (she has 3 of us), and for that, we are all grateful.

My mom, who lives in Saranac Lake, discovered this drive when she had to pick up a friend's daughter at the Port Kent ferry dock on Lake Champlain! I've copied her content exactly because it's so detailed -

  • On a sunny day, I rode from home in Saranac Lake, through Lake Placid and along the Ausable River past Whiteface Mountain, passing High Falls Gorge which is worth a stop to visit, then through Wilmington (where you cannot pass the Adirondack Candy Man with out a visit!) and beyond!
  • I passed beautiful meadows with views of the mountains in the distance. I drove past Ausable Chasm another  great natural wonder  to visit!
  • When I arrived at the ferry docks, I was thinking about what a glorious place I live! Peaceful, quiet drive thru nature! I felt as though I was out west in Yosemite at one point! And that is when it hit me, I spend all that time to go out west visiting our National Parks and here I am, living amidst 6 million acres of splendor!

Hope y'all can get out and enjoy some of what our area has to offer. It may feel like 'there's nothing to do' sometimes, but it's not too hard to find something.
